I have a Maxtor 6 B250R0 250 G drive in a removable draw along with a dozen
others but this one is no longer showing up in Win XP Pro. It says it is
unallocated and I have an option to create a partition in Computer Manager
but I would like to look at the drive before I attempt this. Does anyone
with drive experience have any solutions?

TIA

Look at it with two drives. Hook the bad drive up as the
second drive in a computer, or put it another way if
necessary, get another hard drive, install the OS, then hook
up the second drive to view it from the bootable disk.

run maxtor's diag program

I ran MaxBlast 4 and found no errors. This drive is seen at boot time and
shows in device manager. It is seen by applications like HD Tach and Nero
Infotool but is displayed as unallocated. This drive has the same problem
when I insert it in another System. Windows Explorer does not see this
drive.

I have dozens of active drives in removable drawers but none have ever
become unallocated so I am at a loss about what to do next.

I can not read this drive at the command prompt so I am confused about
should I be able to retrieve this data or has it been lost for sure.

I have tried every configuration I can think of with no change. Just can not
read this drive.

A decent recovery program like Easy Recovery
Pro should be able to get your data back.

You may find that if you boot a knoppix CD it can see the drive too.

Thanks. I will look at the Roxio site. I have never heard of a knoppix CD
however.

did you set this drive as 'dynamic'?
I have always seen Basic on all my drives. I have seen an option to convert
but I have no idea what dynamic is or does so I have always stayed away from
that format. The drive continually passes Maxtor Power Max 4 test and it
seems like it just because unallocated at one point for some reason. I will
have to look into ways to read the drive and copy. I can't figure out why
some applications see the drive and some do not. I am able to test so there
must be an easy way to read. I have tried some back-up applications that do
not see the drive so This may take some testing.
