This computer will not process the drive clean wizard. It
starts and stops at about 3% as it is attempting to read
old compressed files . Any help or suggestions? I have
tried to fix the windows installation using the windows
XP home CD installation but still defective.

Try the following web sites for troubleshooting suggestions:

Visit http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp tweaks.htm and scroll
down to Line #48. In the right-hand window, click on
"Disk Cleanup - Compress Old Files Freezes"

Simply click on Kelly's fix, download the registry fix, then run it.
(Note: Disable your antivirus program before running the repair script)

Maybe you should run Norton Utilites on the disk. Maybe
you have a bad sector or a sector that is going bad?
