I recently got a new machine. I took my old drive and made
it a slave, then copied to the new drive using Disk
Commander (DC). System would not boot, so I installed my
Xp upgrade disk in the CD and booted from there. I got all
installed and registered and all my data, users, and
programs but after I boot the system I have a main drive D
not C. Many progs look for stuff on C and its not found. I
have tried going to Drive manager to change the drive
letter but it won;t let me change the boot drive letter. I
tried to map it - no luck. I tried to get to autoexec.bat
and config.sys but they are on drive C which doesn't
exist. HELP!!!

Your solution assumes I see a drive "C" to move the swap
file to. No such luck. I only have a dive "D" visible from
MS explorer. Any other advice would be welco
Yhanks for the effort.

common problem is in the use of the SET button

- Change Disk Drive Letters

First you must remember that you CANNOT change the letter for the

boot drive if it contains the PAGEFILE.SYS (swap file)
and/or HIBERFILE.SYS(hibernate file).
To move pagefile.sys use Control Panel | System | Advanced tab | Settings

under Performance | Advanced tab again | Virtual Memory and CHANGE

button. set the drive you want to move FROM to NO Paging File and click on SET.

set the drive you want to move TO and click SET.

to disable hiberfile.sys use Control Panel | Power Options Hibernate tab.

THEN REBOOT and

Control Panel | Administrative Tools | Computer Management | Disk

Management under Storage, then RIGHT click on the drive letter to change

and select the Change Letter option.

THEN following the first procedure set the PAGEFILE.SYS back to the

drive it was on originally.

XP automatically adjusts the registry for the drive letter changes.
