What is the best alternative for ghost or drive image.
For taking/restoring backup image of drive partition.
Thought DrvImagerXp was what I was looking for but it does whole
patition rather than contents and you need another op system to run it
to backup your windows partition.
thanks

Check out Mondo ( http://www.microwerks.net/~hugo/index.html )
and Partition Image ( http://www.partimage.org/ ). I've used Partimage
on the live cd "Mepis (Simply)" flavor of Debian and it is "point and
click."
It is also available on Knoppix. Both of these utilities can also run from
the
command line. I've not used either for Windows partitions/discs but both
claim to be able to save and restore them. If you give either a shot for
Windows please let us know how they worked for you.

Try Clone Maxx by PC Inspector at

Bill, I like the looks of Clone Maxx but it will only work with entire
drives and won't copy individual partitions on a drive. Do you know of any
similar freeware (besides those in my earlier post) that will image
individual partitions in both Windows, through NTFS, and Linux, through at
least ext3?
TIA, Juzme

You can also use a live linux CD like knoppix and the standard unix
utilities like 'dd' in order to copy single partitions, boot sectors, and
even the MBR. Some instructions,

Use at your own risk.

Partition Saving (V2.91) AKA (was) savepart
<http://www.partition-saving.com/> )

"Most partition types are supported. In the case of FAT
(12, 16 and 32), ext2 and NTFS partitions, you can choose between
saving all sectors or in-use sectors only."

Is Pricelessware:

This one unfortunately requires DOS and a FAT partition :o(

Yes that is right, according to Q9 and Q7 in the FAQ
<http://damien.guibouret.free.fr/en/FAQ.html>

Alternative, have a look at: ImageMaker 1.1
<http://www.majorgeeks.com/download3914.html>
(never tried it my self)

(homepage used to be
<http://www.disk-tools.com/imagemaker.htm> -
but that sites does not seem to exist any more...
the download at majorgeeks.com works though ...)

FYI: first file below downloaded from majorgeeks
today, second file downloaded from authors homepage
last september, both says version 1.1:

downloaded:
(1) imgmaker.exe 496 055 14.02.05 13:37 -a--
(2) imgmaker.exe 507 354 09.09.03 06:20 -a--

Content of folder after installing (2):

Minor revision/bux fix with (2), or just different
"compile settings" etc? Don't know.

Found the following comment here (near bottom of page, under
"Muckshifter's Forum - Image Maker 1.1 free")

<http://www.softpanorama.org/Unixification/working_with_images.shtml>

"The FREE ImageMaker 1.1 does not support image compression and
encryption. These features will be added in a future shareware
version of ImageMaker. The image of an entire hard drive may be
restored only to a hard drive, not a partition, and vice versa.
After restoring a disk partition backup, a reboot is required to
see the restored disk contents. After restoring entire hard disk
backups, or in any other cases, no reboot is requred. The
download is very small, at just 476KB."

OK, tried to run it now. The help mentions

"Check the "Compress Image" checkbox of you want to have your
image compressed."

but no such checkbox to be found. The program is also "ad/naq/ware" -
in that it seems if you click anywhere in the "listbox window",
outside of the partitions listed there, it loads IE and tries to go
online to a "buy now" page at www.shareit.com. A "clickable"
advertisement is also shown at button of the main program window
(under the partitions- list). Not tested any further, no available
spare disks or partitions to play with (mess with)now.

About (1): does not run, claims I need to log on as admin - even if
I already am.

About (2): No such problem, so I would guess probably a buxfixed
version, but see my other post about *ad/nagware* "feature".

Get Mepis or some other live CD Linux distro and run Partition Saving.
Except for knowing the Linux terms for which partition will hold the
image, the whole thing is point and click. For example, all I had to
type was /mnt/hdb5/xxx (where xxx is the name I gave the clone and hdb5
is the partition I used to save the image). That's also what I'll type
to restore the original. If this gives you a problem you can run
qtparted (a Partition Magic work-alike) from the same live distro disc
and make and/or get the name of the image (B/U) partition that way. If
you prefer building your own boot disc, versus use of a live Linux
distro, you can get Partition Saving from the PL2005 CD or from
acf.freewarehome but, then, unless you build it, too, you won't have the
convenience of being able to run qtparted from the same disc. Partition
Saving is also available on a System Rescue Disc having a link on the
SavePart site. BTW, to save some later heart ache, be sure to clean up,
defragment, etc., any NTFS partition you want to clone.
