Hi, I'm new to using Drive image, and something of a muppet in the world of
computers. I noticed just how slow mine is copying data, approx 100mb per
min.I've looked at similar queries but missed the earlier mails. Is there a
fairly simple method by which I can speed the process up.
many thanks,
David W

Try the /IDE=YES flag on the PDQI line on the rescue floppys.
If that does speed it up, modify the virtual boot to include it.
The virtual boot isnt trivial to modify for muppets.

Thanks Rod, As my system creates the image without using the rescue floppy,
I can't see how that will affect it. This is probably a stupid comment on my
part - but there you go. Also, should / can drive image overwrite the
previous image when you're running a weekly task? Thanks again, DW

The PDQI program that the /IDE switch works with
is used by both the rescue floppy and the virtual boot.

Its just a lot easier to add it to the floppy and see if it makes
any difference. If it does, you can add it to the virtual boot too.

It can, yes.

Whether it should or not really depends on the amount of space
you have and whether you want more than one image file.

If you want to be able to go back more than a week, if say
you discover your system was virus infected when the last
image file was made, then you dont want to overwrite it.

Thanks Rod,,
How do I amend the switch in XP PRO?
I tried to email you but can't get through

How do I amend the switch in XP PRO?

Just edit the floppy initially to see if it works.
I tried to email you but can't get through

Yeah, that email address is getting swamped with the Swen
shit. I dont even bother to empty it since it fills up again in minutes.

Should really get another and mung it, just havent gotten around to it.

Doh, I feel embarassed but how do I edit the flopy? I can't open the pqdi
folder in XP, and i can't get into dos. Sorry to be a nuisance.
cheers
David.
ps that swen is a real pain in th ass

Doh, I feel embarassed

You should only feel that way about
that spectacular rash on your genitals.
but how do I edit the flopy?

Make the rescue floppys. Put the first floppy in the floppy
drive again, look at it with My Computer or Explorer.

Highlight the file called AUTOEXEC
Right mouse click on that and select the Open with entry in the
popup menu or Edit, depending on how your system has been used.
Select NotePad in the list that pops up if you selected Open with
Add /IDE=YES to the line with PDQI on the front of it, usually the last line.
Save the change using the File/Save menu entry in notepad.

Boot the floppy in the usual way, create
an image, see if the speed is improved.
I can't open the pqdi folder in XP, and i can't get into dos.

Dont worry about that for the moment, see if the switch helps.
Sorry to be a nuisance.

No nuisance, thats what these technical newsgroups are for.
cheers
David.
ps that swen is a real pain in th ass

Yeah, the culprits should at least be burnt at the stake or something |-)

Hi Rod, How did you know about my rash?
I've opened the first disk, and lo and behold there's not a file autoexec.
There's chkdsk, display, mode, mouse, partinfo, himem, drivers, fdsk, keybd
and nwcdex. Any suggestions?
cheers

Maybe you have hidden files set up to not display. I think it's this
way by default in XP. You can go into the Windows Explorer prefs to
fix this.

If I told you that, I'd have to kill you.

Sorry, didnt think to check that with XP. When viewing the contents
of the floppy, you need to use Tools/Folder Options/View and untick
Hide protected operating system files
and tick
Show hidden files and folders

Then hit Apply, and then OK and then the F5 key
to refresh the display of the contents of the floppy.

Yes. Stop top posting. And if you must top post, trim what follows,
you lazy idiot.

oohhh sorry Chris, what is 'top posting'? Without knowing that I can't truly
appreciate your searing wit and use of language!

Hi again Rod, sorry to 'top post' at least I guerss I am. Is there an email

You are indeed. Not that I mind at all.
Is there an email addrss I dcould contact you on
as I wanted to ask your advice on changing a drive.

I prefer to do it in the newsgroup,
mainly because others can read it too.
Must go now, the 'top posting' police at banging at the door!

Just shoot when you can see the whites of their eyes.

Dont be fooled why what look like Jehovah's Witnesses,
thats just the disguise those top posting goons use.

I understand completely, I could be a 92 yr old Professor of Computing with
an advanced dip in top posting, trying to lure impressionable young men (or
women), into a sordid seedy correspondence about the size of my ram!
I'm trying to change a 20gig hd for a new 40 gb hd. I already have a
'slave'( here comes the saucy bit) 40gb hd drive in addition to my main
20gb. My thinking, if such it can be called, is to copy the main drive onto
my slave drive, swap my main drive for the new drive, and then copy back
from the slave drive to the new main drive. Obviously I'd have to change
into something More comfortable for this last bit!
Does this sound feasible Rod?
cheers

Its not that so much as I just think its better to discuss
these sorts of questions in the newsgroup because
plenty are interested in this sort of basic config issue.

Sounds like you are into S&M.

You just need to copy the 20GB drive to the 40GB drive
and then make the 40GB drive the master and boot from it.

With XP and 2K its best to do the initial boot after the copy
with just the 40GB drive plugged in, otherwise they can get
very confused when they can see both copys at the same time.

Then when its booted off the 40GB fine, put the 20GB
back in again as the slave and do what you like with it.

There is something to be said for running with just the 40GB for
a while, just in case it dies in the first few days. You still have the
20GB drive with the original contents on it for backup in that case.
Obviously I'd have to change into something More comfortable

Yep, completely routine with a bit of care.

More likely, you're just a lazy, stupid, selfish, idiot, so it's "too
much work" for you to trim your posts, and everyone else just has to
live with the mess you leave.

But Chris, by replying in this way, ie 'top posting', aren't you just as
guilty as I?
PS. You missed out fat
