I have been backing up my full C drive regularly to a removable drive
using DRIVE IMAGE 5.0 for a long time without any problems. All of a
sudden I am getting an error message just as the backup is about to
start, and backup stops. Error 58: "Unable to write to the boot
sector. Virus protection software may be running."

I have been using Norton AV for as long as I have been using this type
of backup and have never had this problem. I didn't think NAV would
remain active when then system was switched to DOS, but I did try
disabling it before running the backup and had the same problem.

I am using Win98SE if that is pertinent.

This backup scheme has saved me much agony twice, and I would really
like to get an answer to the problem. Any suggestions as to the cause
and cure would really be appreciated.

If present, disable the Boot Virus Protection/AntiVirus scheme in your
system's BIOS...it puts a lock (protecion lock) on the very first sector of
the hard disk.

Thanks for the reply. Unfortunately, there is nothing in the BIOS that
refers to that scheme. Is there any other way to see what might affecting
the boot sector? Or what might have caused it to change suddenly after
running with no problems for at least two years? I use Norton AV which
checks the boot sector each time the computer is booted.

When the PQDI.EXE (The Drive Image 5.0/2002 core program modifies the
bootsector and reboots in order to create the image the boot protection
scheme of e.g. Norton Antivirus is no longer there for the system has
abandonned entirely Windows.

You may want to replace the current Master Boot Record by issueing a FDISK
/mbr from a Windows 98 rescue disk and repeat the process...
