My CD of Drive Image 7 is developing a crack.
Can't find one for sale on the Web.....
Anybody got an old one they can spare?
Thanks

Does your copy still work? If so burn a copy.
Harry, I knew I could count on you for an
intelligent bit of advice. I burned a backup
copy when it was new.....but they buried
something in it that does not copy....so the
"PowerQuest Recovery Environment" capability
is absent from any copy that I can make. Now
if you have a way for me to overcome *that*......

PowerQuest had an update that I downloaded as file: DriveImage701_ESD.zip.
It was 365,969,915 bytes. Took me a day and a half to get the update (I was
on dialup at the time).

When the file was opened there was an .iso image of the update CD
(VPRO201P.iso). This could be burned to a CD using the accepted burning
methods to transfer the .iso file to a usable CD. I used Roxio CD Creator to
do this.

Subsequent to this update I have 7.01a and 7.03

See if maybe you have downloaded, and saved the updates. I do hope that you
update your programs regularly from the issuing manufacturers! And, burning
a backup copy for personal use is not thievery. It is a prudent thing to do.
I have backups of every program I have ever purchased or downloaded and
burned.

Richard, the only similar file I have that I downloaded is
VPRO203_personalupdate_esd.zip which unzips to about
50 MB....not 366MB, so it is an update, and doesn't make a full
..ISO... and right now I'm not sure it is even Drive Image.
Now if you'd like to go to the effort of making a copy for me...

See my note to Harry about the burned-copy not being
usable, in that it has the full program but will *not*
run PQRE which is the Recovery Environment. You're right about
a backup copy not being thievery.....but they must have seen
it differently because I couldn't make a complete copy. Has
anybody else fopund the same thing, with respect to using a
'backup copy' of Drive Image 7 in full PQRE mode?

In addition, Richard and Harry:

I took Drive Image off my machine when I installed NSW 2006 Premier
and discovered that Symantec had incorporated most of DI-7 into
their GHOST 10.....and I have NSW 2006, and I don't believe it
can co-exist with D-I 7.

You're right!

VPRO203 is an update to the "installed" program on your hard drive. It will
NOT update the downloaded .iso file (701_ESD.zip) used for the creation of
the Install/recovery CD.

Few questions:

1) Do you have your original install serial number?

2) Do you know how to access & download from a binary group?

I can upload a copy of the disk for you if you like to maybe
<alt.binaries.misc> or <alt.binaries.test>

P.S. I *DO NOT* condone pirated software but as you appear to be a legit
owner there is no harm in just giving you a copy to use your serial to
install........Say the word and I'll put it up for you.

How are you copying the disc? If you are copying the files/directories of
the disc to a blank I can see how you'd not get the boot files as these are
typically hidden. Thus the "copy" would not be bootable. But if you use a
third party program and use it's Copy disc to disc then you should be fine.
Most third party burning apps have this function. Including freeware apps
like CDBurnerXP Pro

Yes, BT, mine is legit...I have the original PowerQuest CD
and on its paper sleeve, the 20-character code is present.

I don't recognize the terms you refer to in (2), so
perhaps I don't. If you'd be so kind as to upload a
copy of D.I.-7, I'd like to try it. The real question is this:
Copies I've made from the original, do work as far as
creating the Drive Image...but they do *not* boot to the
PQRE, so I can't do the Recovery. Worth a try on your copy.

Ok that's a good start.......

Well than that might be a problem if you're not familiar with binary
groups......... ;0)
My copy does boot to the PQRE

Does Thunderbird actually have binary decoding capability? I'm not
familiar with TB at all....

Basically you subscribe to the group I upload to and download all the
RAR parts.
Do you have a zip program and are able to burn an ISO?
I believe Winzip or XP's native unzipping tool may work on RAR's......
Or, bottom line, what zip prog do you use?

See if you can subscribe to a group called <alt.binaries.fukengruven>
It's the least amount of head count & would be much easier to work
with....

If not make sure you can get the other two groups I mentioned
earlier....Worst case scenario I will direct you to a prog that's much
easier.

WOW!!!!! I just installed it on a test machine and this may be the
answer to some situations I have with my current reader......WOW!! Where
the hell have I been not using this prog............. ;0)
It does have decoding capability (I didn't think it did) so that's a big
plus.........

Still, let me know how you wanna do this, I'll be more than happy to
help ya out & walk you through it.......

I don't know but I can ask them. Of course, I have IE and could
use it if need be.

ZIP and UNZIP? Like PKZIP and PKUNZIP? I have those....
and XP's native unzipper seems to work.

Working my way into those newsgroups is going to be more than I can
handle, I fear. The copies I've made, that don't get the hidden
files, I did by the simple Windows highlight, copy, and then paste
to the CD burner drive. I don't think I have any other burner software
any more...I've relied on XP because it's so simple and straightforward
to use. What I need is on my source CD, but I need a way to get at it.

Someone has offered to burn a new copy and mail it to me.....let's see
if that works, and thanks for the offers....

Yes, BT, it doesn't surprise me that TB is very powerful. I've been with
Netscape>>Mozilla from the start, and now TB and Firefox. But I don't
feel that I want to step up into those exotic groups. I'm involved with
too many learning projects as it is. Let's see if the copy being burned
for me will be enough.....and *thanks*.

Alrighty than I wish you lots a luck.....Binary groups are really not
that difficult at all, been doing it for more years than I care to think
of......It's the fastest easiest way to share anything, and believe me
most average users have no idea what's available and they'd rather mess
around with that P2P crap.........I'll post a link at the bottom that
gives a great scenario of how it's done in case you are a bit
curious....

Anyways I'll give you a *BIG* thank you for nudging my curiousity with
TB....I have been meaning to install it but haven't gotten around to it
yet....(Too busy downloading binaries...He, He)

I do have FFox installed though and love it!!!

Let me know how ya make out........... ;0)

Okay, BT, I'd appreciate it if you could point me to
how to join or enroll.. I went to SLYCK and
clicked newsgroups.....saw a zillion NG names....
didn't see the two you suggested earlier, nor how to
enroll......

Actually your ISP supplies the newgroups......The same fashion you used
to subscribe to this group in TB is the same concept.....Check your NG
listing in TB, type in the search & see if it's available. Right click
the name you gave when you set it up (under the local folders tree) and
choose subscribe, type the NG name in there and see if it appears.

Slycks site gives an education on how the NG's function that's
all...It's in the intro section (#1) & at the bottom of the page you'll
see the "next" option that goes through the rest of the pages #2-11.
