Can Drive Image 2002 backup to DVD,
Yep.

or is there something similar that will?

Yep, Ghost. Ghost can be very cheap if you get it as part of
SystemWorks Pro. Got to be Pro tho, it isnt included in SystemWorks.

Woops, this is a daring statement! Where did you get that info from?
Officially (!), DVD drives are supported starting with Drive Image 7.0.
Kinda tough when imaging a system partition under DOS to e.g. a USB or
Firewire DVD burner!

People doing it.

Separate issue entirely.

She didnt even mention the system partition
under dos, or USB or firewire DVD burners either.

Yeah, 2002's support for DVDs is rather limited. You
basically have to do the image creation at the Win level,
with the DVD already setup as a drive accessible using
a drive letter with something like say DirectCD etc.

That means you cant image the boot partition and
need to have a separate Win partition you can boot
from to image the usual Win boot partition etc.

All rather clumsy compared with the direct support
for DVDs in Drive Image 7 or Ghost 2003.

All I want to do is make an image of boot partition C: and D: on same
drive and image to a DVD+RW or +R. When I tried this it failed.

Yeah, it is possible with 2002 but rather clumsy and awkward.

It would be simplest to just get Drive Image 7 or Ghost 2003.

It is possible to do it with DI 2002, but you have to do
that at the Win level with the DVD drive with a drive
letter with something like DirectCD. Then just specify
the destination for the image file in the usual way.

The main problem is with the boot partition. Since DI 2002
needs to do the image creation at the Win level, and cant image
the drive its booted from, you need to have another bootable
Win partition just so you can image the main boot partition.

If you have lots of spare drive space, you can write the image
file to a hard drive and then manually move it to the DVD after
the image has been created, but you're not likely to have that
much free space, even if you do the two partitions separately.
