I have a used computer with XP Home installed, but did not have a restore disk with it. I purchased another disk and need to format drive C for a fresh install. When I try to format drive C I am asked if I want to force a dismount on the volume,I type Y and then I am told that the volume is in use and connot format C. What am I doing wrong? Help Please!

You need to boot with the XP CD installed.
All the tools needed are on the CD.

You may have to boot into the BIOS and set the CD driver to boot before the
Hard drive does.
Then install the XP CD and reboot.

Good Luck,
Jerry

You are, of course, booting from...?
1-a floppy disk with the format and fdisk programs on the disk
2-or your winxp cd in the cd drive

You may NOT boot from the C drive and then also try to format from C

Trying to format the System drive while in Windows is like trying to
change a tire while the car is moving. It don't work.

Boot from the XP CD. It has all the tools you need to format,
partition, and install XP.
