Presently I'm stationed in Baqubah, Iraq and I don't have
access to my library of computer books. I have a laptop
that I do all my work on. I have a USB external drive.
My working directory has about 4GB of data on it. How
can I copy this folder unto the external drive and keep
only the new files from copying. I already copied from
the laptop to the external drive. Its time to update,
what should I do. TIA

You can use the xcopy command (see "xcopy /?") for the commands. Should
be clear enough from there. If not, post back.

However, I would instead direct your attention to a better tool that
Microsoft makes available for free: robocopy. It's stands for "robost
file copy".

Download a copy from Windows Server 2003 Resource Kit Tools

Hope this is useful to you. Let us know.

Hi,

If you want to make a complete backup of your data on the
external drive and then only copy files that change:

Create a briefcase on the external drive (right click and
select new - Briefcase). Then drag and drop your data into
the new briefcase. The first time you do this all files
will be copied over. When you open the briefcase the
second time, select update all and it will only recopy
files that have changed on your laptop.

Tim

The easy way to do what you want is to use Karen's Replicator which can be found at:

http://www.karenware.com

This program will work with all computer drives and even with CD-RW drives/disks. It
is great for daily backups when using a second drive for data or even program files.
I use it for MyDocuments and several other folders daily.
