I've searched around all over the place for solutions to
these problems that may or may not be related but haven't
come up with anything useful.. I am hoping that someone can
help me out here.

Here's a bit of background on my network. I have a Digital
AlphaXL running my network. It runs Linux and is being used
as a firewall, proxy, fileserver (samba), and
router/bridge. I have 3 PCs connected to this network and 2
game systems (XBox and PS2).. 2 of the PCs are desktop PCs
-- one runs WinXP Home and the other runs Win2000 Pro. The
third is a laptio running XP home and connected via a US
Robotics wireless network (802.11b). This whole setup has
been running flawlessly for the past 6 months or so (and
had a similar setup running for a year prior)..

I started having problems with my one desktop PC (running
WinXP) about a week ago. This is the PC that has my printer
connected to it. I was trying to print something from my
laptop and it said that the printer couldn't be reached. It
was plugged in and turned on.. I tried but couldn't connect
through the properties either. On the desktop PC I noticed
that I couldn't connect to any of the network drives or
other PCs through Windows shares either.

I removed the network connection and rebooted to have
Windows reinstall the network card to see if that would fix
the issue. No dice. The windows shares came back breifly
but then after a few minutes, I would get the message "An
error occurred while reconnecting to the drive. Microsoft
Windows Network: The local device name is already in use.
This connection has not been restored".. then Explorer
crashes and restarts. Still no printer access..

I also noticed that my dial-up connections had disappeared.
I researched that, and from what I understood, there needs
to be a 1:1 connection to device ratio there. I did notice
a 1394 Network device that was in hardware manager that was
not in the network panel. Disabled the 1394 controller
because I don't use it anyhow. Deleted the ethernet
connection and rebooted. Same problems.

I can connect through my broadband just fine. I can access
the internet just fine. I just can't reach any of my
network drives or host a network printer. I can also
connect to the other PCs (via VNC) just fine.. they just
can't connect to this one. My other 2 computers have no
problems with accessing the network drives or each other so
I don't think it is a problem with the network itself..
just this PC..

Any thoughts? I'm getting really close to just reformatting
and installing Windows 2000 Pro here..

Also, let me know if you need any more information..

Thanks so much!
Kurt

The 1394 is your Firewire connection and is unlikely to be
related to your problem. The problem machine still
accesses the Internet. This means that TCP/IP is working
and you have a valid IP address. What is failing is
network shares. Things I would look at are login names
and passwords, workgroup names and share permissions.
Make sure that netbios over TCP/IP is enabled. Make sure
firewall software is not running on the problem machine.
Try pinging back and forth from all the machines using
both the IP number and computer name.
