I have been using my XP Pro system for some time and all
my partitions/drives are populated with data.
I decided to convert all the drives to NTFS. Partitions
C,E and F converted with no issue. All partitions are on
the same physical drive.
However, disk D: which uses the whole of the second
physical drive is showing up in explorer as requiring a
format. This drive only happens to contain the program
files directory and most of my archive folders because it
is a 70 gig drive. My heart almost stopped this morning.
Can anybody advise as to why this has occurred?

Possibly a problem with the Master Boot Record. Boot with the XP CD and
select the option to Repair using the Recovery Console. Enter you Admin
password when prompted. At eh command prompt type FIXMBR and when finished
remove the CD and type EXIT to reboot.

If that doesn't help you might need to use a data recovery program. There
are several lower cost apps that can likely help. Some people recommend
Ontrack's Easy Recovery http://www.ontrack.com/easyrecoverydatarecovery/ I
have not use it but hear it is good. Personally I use Winternal's Disk
Commander which is part of ERD Commander but it is expensive.

Hindsight is always 20/20. This is the reason we always advise people to
Backup, Backup, Backup.
