Hi,
I had a problem with Vista Home premium on an Advent laptop. I dragged some
files from a network drive to the CD drive icon to write copies to a CD-RW in
the drive. Instead of copying them they were DELETED from the network drive
and did not show up in the list of files to be written to CD. Using Ctrl-C,
Ctrl-V or right-click menus has done the same thing. The only way to get it
to work was to copy the files to the local hard disk first. I had to restore
the network drive files from backups.

Is there a patch or hotfix for this, it's really dangerous...

Thanks, Ian

1) Try restarting. If no joy

2) From an elevated cmd prompt run SFC by typing at the prompt sfc /scannow
***SFC as a Remedy***:

SFC or System File Checker is a bit like the spare tire in your car or a
backup battery I suppose. In Vista of course, they have changed it somewhat
and come up with a new name--Redmond stands for name it something different
twice a year and now it's part of WRP or Windows Resource Protection. It
scans protected resources including thousands of files, libraries, critical
folders, and essential registry keys, and it replaces those that are
corrupted with intact ones. It fixes a lot of problems in Windows XP, OE,
Windows Vista, Win Mail, IE6, and on Vista or if it is installed on XP, IE7.
It protects these things from changes by any source including
administrators, by keeping a spare of most of them.

How to Run SFC:

Type "cmd" into the Search box above the Start Button>and when cmd comes up
at the top of the Start menu>right click cmd and click "run as Admin" and
when the cmd prompt comes up at the cmd prompt type "sfc /scannow" no quotes
and let it run. This may fix things quite a bit. It replaces corrupt files
with intact ones, if you're not familiar with it.

3)Try using System Restore if you have an appropriate restore point.

4) If 1-3 don't work, and if you have a Vista DVD run Startup Repair by
insterting the DVD: (Startup Repair can be used to fix files in Vista when
it is systemically broken. It is not confined simply to startup problems :

Software Recovery Programs:
PCInspector
UndeletePlus+
Restoration.
There is a heap of them out there.
If you have to do it that way, slave the HD in another computer, so nothing
gets overwritten.

Your problem has come up here before; hope someone remembers the answer.

I had a hard time telling who the OP was--I only saw MK's post not Ian's and
I saw no reference to files from Documents so I had no way to know. Maybe
you're seeing a message I'm not but I always have it set to sync all
messages. I don't see any message from the Ian she (mk55 refers to if she
is the OP and no ref to docs).

Thanks,

CH

Chad, you an I both replied to MK55; Ian's message does not show up.
Below is the MK55's message stating lost his Documents folders

I know it's been a while Ian, but did you try recovering those deleted
files and if so were you successful?

I experienced the same thing this morning. I had selected several
folders to be copied to a CD, it looked like they were copying just
fine, but the machine wasn't making the normal sound it makes when it is
burning to a CD. Then I noticed after it was done that nothing got
burned to the CD, and in addition, all the folders were gone from "My
Documents."

The only way I could find the files again was to use the search
function, but when I tried to open them, I would get an error message
saying file could not be found. Even though when I clicked file
properties it said it was still be in the same location -- but going
there physically, I could not find it.

I'm thinking of trying to recover the files with some downloadable
software...does anyone have any experience with this problem? Thanks

Yep Mick--

Sometimes the OP message doesn't show despite hitting Send/Receive>download
the next x hundred messages a few times, and having Syncronize set to all
messages It's frustrating but the best I can do in that case is just try to
put a solution on the thread. I'm not sure why that happens when it does.

Thanks,

CH
