Drag/drop MS Word Doc Shortcut to Win2K Start Menu

I've set up a folder on my Win2K Start Menu where I would like to
store shortcuts to my frequently used MS Word document files.

The only way I know how to create shortcuts for my MS Word documents
is to go into Windows Explorer, find the folder containing the
document file, and drag the file to the Start Menu and drop its
shortcut into the folder I've created there.

That gets a bit tedious, having to wade through the Windows Explorer
folder tree.

What I'd like to be able to do is this:

When I have a Word document file open in front of me and decide that
I'd like to add it to my Start Menu folder, I could just just drag a
shortcut directly from the open document file onto the Start Menu.
Instead of having to switch to Windows Explorer, find the document
file, and then drag the shortcut.

I've tried left and right clicking and dragging from many different
points on the MS Word window, and have looked in many of the drop down
menus, but so far the trick to this operation has eluded me.

You can create a folder on the desktop by right-clicking an empty part of it
and drag any document to that, if that will do it for you.

Do you mean drag the document to the folder or drag a shortcut to the
folder?

I want to leave the document in its original place in the directory
tree that is displayed by Windows Explorer. But I want to be able to
put shortcuts to documents I'm working on into a folder (preferably on
the Start Menu) on-the-fly, while I'm working on the document.

There may be a way to create a shortcut from an open document but I'm not
familiar with it. There is a (recent) Documents folder in the start menu but
I found it so annying that I hacked it out of the GUI.

Yeah, I've tried creating a shortcut from the Documents folder, but
haven't figured out how to do it.

And every time I play an MP3 file, it bumps one of my documents from
the Documents folder. So if I play 15 MP3s in a row, all my "actual"
documents get bumped off the list and replaced by MP3s. Argh!

Maybe it's time to switch to Linux?

Or just open the REAL recent documents shortcut folder instead.

Hi Bob,

Thanks for that suggestion.

I just put a shortcut to the REAL "Recent" folder on my Start Menu so
that I now can drag shortcuts from that folder directly to my "Active
Documents" folder which is also on my Start Menu.

It works great!

No more wending my way through the maze of the Windows Explorer file
tree for me!

One thing though...is there a way to configure the Recent shortcut now
residing on my Start Menu so that the sub menu that opens up will be
sorted by date, with the most recent date at the top, rather than
alphabetically by file name as it now appears?
