No one answered my previous post, but since this minor problem is so
irritating, I am reposting with a different method:

Years ago, in W98, Jim Eshelman posted a reg fix for drag and drop, refer
to my W2K problem, as below.

Can his W98 reg fix apply to W2K without disaster?

I don't have the reg backup methods in W2K to try this, as I do in W98.

I daily cold boot as it avoids some surprises that happen when I let a
long time go between them.
But little surprises still happen.

Starting today, when I drag a file or folder, the name appears at the
cursor as I'm moving it.

How to kill that, so no name appears?

Try ERUNT, an excellent free backup pgm for W2000. I've use it for years.
It's simple and foolproof. Use it first, then try Jim's fix. If it fails,
just restore the registry.
PC World - PC World Downloads - ERUNT

Note: ERUNT only works on NT-style Windows.

Thanks, that will work fine.

If you go back to Eshelman's website, you'll find a reg fix for Win98 and a
separate one for use in Win2000 & WinXP.
