when I try to test my sound card from Sounds & Audio Devices in CP, I get
the message Error trying to execute DpvSetup.exe. Error Code 0x80004005,
and it shuts down. The MS Knowledge base article on acceleration does not
help, nor did installing Direct x V9.

Have you checked that your soundcard is compatible with XP and DX9?
What make/ model/age is it?
Could possibly suggest trying the compatibility settings for win95/98 if its
an older card
(right click the exe file, click properties, click compatibility tab, then
make your selection., apply and ok)
Its a DX problem, so whether the soundcard supports it is the issue - not
all hardware does.

what exe. file ?

The sound card is part of my motherboard which is brand new, & XP
compatible. However, when running DXdiag, it does inform me that my sound
card does "NOT" have hard are buffers for sound.

I was thinking DPV was the soundcard brand and the exe was the setup file,
rather than the Direct Play Voice part of DirectX.

As MS says there is a problem, but no solution, I think the gamer sites
might be the best forum. Those guys need responsive comm channels after all,
and have more motivation than most to find answers and workarounds.
One suggestion I noticed was to ensure that the recording mic was not muted
(control panel>sounds &audio devices>audio>sound recording>volume) while
others suggest a clean reinstall is the answer.
Off the topic, but I once cured a video card problem by reinstalling the
driver (no luck) then reinstalling Direct X (bingo).
Maybe whatever happened in that sequence will work for your soundcard.

has some more info regarding buffers, emulation and latency, but it seems
the short answer is to ensure that your sound device is fully DirectX
compatible if the whole DirectX suite is to function properly.
