DPI Scaling does not work

In checking out Vista Business I changed the DPI Scaling to 144% which for my
uses was too large. I have tried a zillion times to change it back to one of
the other options, i.e. 96%, 125% or another custom selection, restarted and
every time it restarts it is at 144%. HP told me to increase the resolution.
I note that others say their resolution can be 1280x1024. My maximum is
1280x800. I have the GeForce Go 7400 driver 7.5.10.9815 installed. An online
check says this is the one my system should have. I do not want to reinstall
the operating system. What can I do???

Are you making the change with a User account that has administrator
privileges?
Do you a normal Restart or Shutdown from the Start Menu?
What is the native resolution of your display?
Have you tried 1280x720 or 1280x792(since 800 is not divisible by 12)?

Thank you JW. Yes I am an administrative user. Have done both restarts and
shutdowns then startup. How do I discover what the native resolution of my
display is? I have tried those other ratios. I just uninstalled and
reinstalled the video driver; same problem.

Some easy ways to determine the native resolution of a digital monitor is to
look on the any labels on the monitor or the box it came in or look up the
model on the manufacturer's web site.
