I seem to have lost the ability to download third party
programs. how do i find and turn on the program that say
save, open from current location, and so on? any help
would be appreciated. thanks Bill
Downloading a file is the result of actions:
Using a browser, click on a download link. This sends a requests to the web
server for a specific file. The web server acknowledges the request and in
return it sends some info to the browser about the file. The browser checks
the file type and, if necessary, prompts the user to confirm the file
request and to begin the downloading. By the way, this sequence applies to
downloading web pages as well as downloading "third party programs."
Somewhere in that chain of events is a break. You can obviously download
web pages but you are not able to download things like setup files. Why?
Possible reasons: Parental control software, security settings in the
browser or elsewhere on the system, browser- and download-helpers that
cause problems instead of helping.
What *does* happen when you try to download? Any messages on the screen? If
redirected to a mirror site for downloading, is your browser disallowing
redirects? Have you tried a right click on a link to a file and selected
Save Target As...? Are the results any different? Does this happen on all
users' accounts or only one?
What type of files are you downloading? Is it possible someone clicked the
"do not ask this again" box and the files are downloading to the last
location that was selected?
