For thoes of us who use 56k modems downloading a large
file can take up a day or so. I think windows users
should be able to pause a download so he/she could
continue at another time.

Yep, downloading can be a time-consuming effort. I use - even now that I'm
on cable - a little utility called "Download accelerator" from
http://www.speedbit.com/

The version I have was free, but I don't (yet) see the free version on
there. Its two features I like are that it will simultaneously download
from multiple servers (up to the speeed your connection can handle, of
course), and it has a "resume" function that will do just what you're asking
for... allow you to stop a download and come back to it later. As long as
the source allows it, which most seem to do.

there are probably others, but I've been happy with that for several years.
Sorry if I sound like a commercial... I'm not!

Do a search on Google or www.download.com on "download resume" and
you'll find plenty of utilities that provide a resume feature (but the
server must also support this feature).

If a download take way to long it could be your modem has gone bad.

Also, it depends on how good you isp is and how reliable your
telephone companies lines are.
