When I download a file using explorer, my PC really slows down. CPU usage is
typically > 75%, but mouse movement, keyboard etc. are sluggish.

I am running XP Home on a 3500+ Athlon 64. 2.2GHz and 768MB RAM.

Any ideas on how I can speed things up?

What other programs/processes (hit ctrl-alt-del and check the task
manager) do you have running, and what's your CPU usage before the
download starts?

Hi Sangoma,
It depend on how busy the Website server you are downloading from and how
big the File is?.
Does this behavior repeat itself with other small download files?.
Again did you check if you are clean from malwares and your security
settings set to allow download.
Sometimes MS downloader get the Hecupp and need to install a new one.
HTH.
Please let us know.

I believe that I have good anti virus, anti spyware etc. I have been able to
identify any apps running and am satisfied with them. So far the file size
does not really seem to matter. I used to be able to download 4 files at a
time with no degradation of performance.

I seem to have the same problem with Firefox (just tried it) - maybe I need
to move my query to another section?

How do I install a new MS downloader?

Well, Nass,

I went to your webpage and found a winsock repair tool. I ran it and I don't
know what it did, but my problem has been solved!

Thanks
