With windows XP how do you download data files from a DVD to a hard drive? Is special software required?

With the disk inserted, open your DVD drive either through Windows Explorer
or My Computer. (Mine opens automatically upon closing of tray.) Contents
on it should show. Then it's simply Edit>Copy of the wanted files. Then
open My Documents and either select or create a folder where you want the
copies to go. No special software is needed.

Hi,

Nope, nothing special, you just drag and drop using Windows Explorer, or
copy/paste into the target folder.

A DVD drive behaves just like a CD drive. However you must have a DVD drive
installed to read DVD discs. You can't read a DVD disc in a CD-Rom or CD/RW
drive. On the other hand DVD drives can read both DVDs and CDs.
