Bullwinkle

I am running XP sp2 with all updates in place.

In the last 2 weeks my download speed has tanked from 322 kb/sec to 19
kb/sec. It starts out at the higher speed and drops down to the lower speed
in about 5 seconds.

In running a video from utube the jerkiness is very apparent.

I have been unable to locate any reason for this. I've checked my filters
and nothing seems to have changed.

I would appreciate any suggestions.

Thanks and regards,

Bullwinkle.

Hi Bullwinkle,

Contact your ISP. Most private internet connection plans have limits on the
amout of downloads that can be made in a period before they slow down the
connection.

Thanks, but that doesn't apply in this case. I use Verizon dsl and there are
no quantity limitations. In any case I haven't downloaded that much.

Have you checked the youtube site if that is the problem. Does it happen on other sites also. Are you doing this at peak times when the net and your ISP is overloaded.

Hi Peter,

It happens all the time on any web site. It happens when I'm downloading a
file of any length. It's now 4:04 am here in NYC and I'm downloading a
Microsoft file at the great speed of 2.04 kb/sec. I need to know where to
look to clean this up and get back to some decent download speeds which I
had a week or so ago.

Regards,

I'd still contact Verizon as Rob mentioned - DSL is carried over phone
lines and there may be a problem on your line.

In the meantime, you might want to look at some of the tests here:

Hi,

I'm aware of this site and have used it several times. It's results show
that everything is hunky dory but my actual download speed is still very
slow. I'm pretty much out of ideas. I found that the other day my message
download speed was also going way down. I removed AVG Free 7.5 this cured
that somewhat. I've reinstalled Counterspy which is my primary anti spyware
program. But with it or without it the speed is still dropping from the
start to the finish. This had not happened to me before.

Incidentally, I reinstalled my hard drive contents using Acronis back to
before the problem. Also before this last "Patch Tuesday". I wonder if that
caused the problem.

I'm going to install the XP updates next week and see if that is the
problem.

Any other ideas or suggestions will be happily received and gratefully
accepted.

Thanks and regards,

How much RAM is installed ? Some of the higher data transfer methods seem
almost require at least 1gb.

Totally delete your TIF folder for your user profile:
http://www.mvps.org/winhelp2002/delcache.htm
(You'll have to do it from another Admin. account) Clearing the TIF from IE
will not get the job done - the super hidden index.dat file in that folder
will remain, and could be really bloated.
Or use the CCleaner app mentioned there, then reboot.

Thanks all of you who have made suggestions.

I found the problem and cleared it.

One of the Msoft updates this month change my MRU from 1492 to 0. This
slowed the download speed down to these really low speeds.

By using one of the PC optimize programs I was able to fix this and my
speeds are much better now.

Again thanks to all who made suggestions and gave me clues to locate the
problem.

And which update did that?
