I have Windows XP, and Internet explorer 6. When I click
a button to download something, a new window will open
with nothing on the screenbut a little box in the top
left corner of the screen. The download never starts. I
can however right click on the button and save target as.
Has anyone had the same problem, or can any one offer any
advice?

Here's the fix, courtesy of Alan Edwards, MVP:

If it is only .exe files, then read on and see if this is relevant:
You may have an invalid plugin.
Netscape-Style Plug-ins Do Not Work After Upgrading Internet Explorer
[Q303401]
http://support.microsoft.com/support/kb/articles/q303/4/01.asp

Remove the plugin with Regedit.exe
Start-Run-Regedit.exe
Navigate down to this key and remove it, after exporting it as a
normal safety precaution.

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Internet
Explorer\Plugins\Extension\.exe

If that key exists, then you will see what plugin has been installed.
(QuickTime by the looks of it and if so, I believe they have a fix)
The key does not normally exist.

Remove all download programs such as netzip . Microsoft
advise this on the IE6 download page.

The default downloader on the download will then work.

I think that this is an IE6 "feature"
