downloading problem

hello,

i am unable to download things from IE anymore. i used to
be able to, and then i upgraded to the latest version of
IE, and i have had no luck downloading since then. when i
try to download something, instead of getting the pop-up
box that asks if i want to open it or save it to disk, i
just get a blank screen with a little icon (with a square,
circle, and triangle in it) in the upper lefthand corner
of the screen and no ability to open what i downloaded.
any ideas at all on this would be greatly appreciated, as
this limits what i can do with my computer. thank you!

If it is only .exe files, then read on and see if this is relevant:
You may have an invalid plugin.
Netscape-Style Plug-ins Do Not Work After Upgrading Internet Explorer

Remove the plugin with Regedit.exe
Start-Run-Regedit.exe
Navigate down to this key and remove it, after exporting it as a
normal safety precaution.

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Internet
Explorer\Plugins\Extension\.exe

If that key exists, then you will see what plugin has been installed.
The key does not normally exist.
