Having a VPN connection and internet connection at the same time by
unticking "use default gateway on remote network" works great. You can
browse the Internet and VPN network at the same time. And most people would
advice that this is the best thing to do. And there are many articles on it.
But the problem is people are neglecting the downloading aspects when you
untick "use default gateway on remote network", the downloads traffic would
tend to go through the VPN network connection than the ISP internet
connection and accumulate the VPN company cost of Downloads. So if you have
"use default gateway on remote network" untick, internet downloads traffic
will go both through the ISP internet connection and VPN network connection.
Does anyone know of a way to disable Downloads traffic from the Internet
going through the VPN network connection while having "Use default gateway
on remote network" untick and both the VPN network and ISP Internet is on.

Hi Joe,

I didn't quite understand what you mean by "internet downloads traffic will
go both through the ISP internet connection and VPN network connection". Can
you provide more information regarding the behavior you are seeing?

Hi there Kadirvel,
What's [MSFT]?? The scenario is I untick "use
default gateway on remote network" and having ISP internet connection and
login into my company VPN Network (both connection on). I will be able to
browse the internet while using VPN. But if I have the VPN connection on all
the time. Then I download big files and programs from the internet. The
download from Internet will go both through my company router, the company's
internet connection into the company DNS then via VPN into my computer
(accounting the company's cost of internet downloads). While certain packets
of the download will go through my ISP connection. Something like a
download multilink.

No, that isn't how it works. If you leave the connection at its
default setting (ie "use default gateway .. " set on), all traffic goes
through your company network. Your default gateway is set to be the VPN
link.

If you clear the "use default gateway .. " setting, your default
gateway setting is not changed. You still access the Internet directly. Only
traffic for your company network goes through the VPN. Look at your routing
table before and after you connect to see what happens. Also see MS KB
254231 for an explanation of how the routing changes.
