Downloading Pictures

When I try to open a downloaded "jpeg" file that I received by email, it says there is no preview and comes up blank. What am I doing wrong?

I have a vivicam 3715 and when I plug the USB cable into my computer,
the folder opens and there are all the photos. I just purchased a
computer for my wife, a Compaq 2.7 and there are 4 USB ports (2 front,
2 back). When I plug the camera into her computer, the folder opens
(after searching) and it is empty. Running on XP there is supposedly
no need to install USB software, so what DO I need to do to make this
work properly?
