Downloading pictures to desktop

Can anybody please help. When I right click a picture on
the web, I save as, and then transfer to my desktop.
However, when i try and open the pictute in win xp it
comes up as no image viewable. I never had this problem
in win98. Does anybody know what the problem is? and how
I can resolve it.
