This site has free downloads from independent artists:
http://betterpropaganda.com/home_page.asp There are lots of great
musicians out there whom we've never heard of before. The tracks are
128kbps mp3 files and if you have a fast connection you'll get very quick
downloads.

Real is currently offering 49-cent downloads and I am tempted to try it
out because they have an album there which I've been unable to find by any
other means: http://www.real.com/ I *think* the tracks Real offers are in
mp3 format but I'm not quite sure- one page mentions that the tracks are
192kbps quality, but doesn't mention the file format. Unfortunately, a
requirement is that you install the current RealPlayer in order to
download music from them. It's free, but RealPlayer has a reputation for
being a bad guest on your system once installed. It tries to take control
of all file formats as your default player, and it can be difficult to
prevent it from "phoning home."

And, of course, you always have the "option" of downloading high-quality
music files from the binaries newsgroups for free. Have a look here:
http://www.slyck.com/ng.php and here: http://www.mp3-faq.org/faq1.html

Regards,
Ian.

The RealPlayer Music Store offers 192Kbps RealAudio 10 AAC files. Their new
Harmony technology (available in RealPlayer 10.5), adds compatibility for more
than 100 devices, including the iPod. Through Labor Day, all tracks are 49
cents, and albums are half-price. RealPlayer 10.5 does not install any spyware.

try the ipod site (apple) msn music, yahoo music, do a
google search. be careful some free sites will give
things you may not want.

You can download free music of any genre you desire at the below website
using file sharing:

Without wanting to get into the ethics of it, perhaps you should point out
to him (in case he's a law-abiding type of guy) that file sharing is
probably not legal, and he won't be the RIAA's favourite person if he does
it.
