Downloading maps as JPEG files

I have just finished typing up my travelogues for the last ten years. I would now like to be able to download maps of various countries as JPEG files. Ideally I would also like to be able to show my routes (e.g. Paris to Nantes to Poitiers) with a line on the map.

I have posted this question on the Google Maps forum as well as Travelpod but have not had a reply yet.
 
Use FastStone Capture or similar program to take a screenshot of any avilable map on the net and edit it. With FSC you can put lines and captions to pictures.
