Internet Explorer 6 on W2K pro all patches and updates.

Accessing my hotmail account and downloading an attachment, for instance, a
..wmv file results in this file "trying" to be played in Internet Explorer.
THis is not waht I want. I have tried teh ADVANCED tab under INTERNET
OPTIONS to no avail. I can not find any area on the hotmail site where
something like this might be configured. I do not want to have to have any
file of this nature first opened or played in internet explorer before
having the ability to download it to my local drive.

Anyone happend ot know what the problem could be?

TIA
Bryan

You set this for each file type, e.g. for .zip
Explorer-View-Folder Options-File Types
Find the .zip association (may be WinZip File)
Edit, (or click Advanced on ME or XP) and check the "Confirm open
after download" box

The path to Folder Options may vary according to your operating
system. It may be:
Explorer-View-Folder Options
Explorer-Tools-Folder Options
Start-Settings-Folder Options
Start-Settings-Control Panel-Folder options.

THanks.

I understand the file association thing, but what I do not understand is why
when electing to download the file from my hotmail account, or any other web
based account for that matter, it doesn't give me the option of just
downloading it. IT will begin to play. I have no problem with WMP actually
playing the file, I simply want to be able to download it to my local drive
instead of first having to open it in the associated application.

Am I making any sense?

Thanks

Did you check the box "Confirm open after download"?

I don't see how you can understand it and not understand it.
Why not follow my advice?

When I select to DOWNLOAD ATTACHMENT I am not given an option to CONFIRM
OPEN AFTER DOWNLOAD. ACtually I am not given any options, the attachment
immediately starts the application to open the attachemnt.

I did not say I wouldn't follow your advice. I do understand file
associations. Perhaps you do not understand me. My inability to download the
attachment directly to my hard drive without having to first have the
associated application play the attachment is not the way the downloading of
attachments from my Hotmail account has always functioned. Used to be I
could elect whether or not to open the attachment or download the attachemnt
to my local drive. This is no longer an option. I am curious as to why this
is so, and would like to find a way to restore this functionality if
possible.

THanks for the help
Bryan
