Hello
I am a "newbie" to the pc, and to XP. I only had very
limited exposure to the version 98
My question/problem ... I'm having difficulty downloading
ANY type of program, and then installing it.
After I've done this, it leaves a shortcut on my desktop,
yet when I click on the shortcut, all it does is start to
install the same program over and over.
I have gone to the Program Files and double-clicked on a
program that i have downloaded, and all it does is start
installing again.
What step am I missing?
Thanks for the help.
Joyce

Joyce:
It appears that the icon on your desktop is the program itself. If it is a
short cut, there will be a tiny arrow at the base of the icon. Try going to
where the program is installed, EX. C:\program files\book. Look in the book
folder for an icon for the program, right click it and copy to desktop.
I hope this is what you are looking for. If not, please reply to this
string, so others may help.

You are downloading the programs onto your desktop.. try creating a folder
specifically for the programs that you download.. next time that you save
one to your computer, point the program to your new folder.. this will
prevent your desktop filling up with program installation files..

Hi Joyce,

After you've downloaded and installed the program you should delete what you
downloaded from the desktop (often called Setup.exe) or save it somewhere in
case you need to reinstall. The install should copy the necessary files to
C:\Program Files\Whatever, should add a shortcut to the new program to your
Start menu, and possibly add a shortcut to the new program (will have the
little arrow Larry mentioned). After you've installed, use the Start menu
shortcut to launch the program.
