I've just got Downloader Stubby C from somewhere. I've been reading
various noticeboards but all I can find is technical jargon. What is
this program, where does it come from, and how can I remove it? AVG
doesn't seem up to it.

It appears to hide in the directory

\windows\THi5660.tmp

what I want to know is can I delete this directory?

There are a number of other of these temporary directories in my
windows directory (Windows 98); can I safely delete all directories
with a .tmp extension?

Thanks

It might be worth trying Sysclean by Trend - its a virus checker that
does all current viruses from their normal signature files, but is
designed as a one-off only - it isn`t a normal virus checker that you
should have installed and running permanently.

http://www.trendmicro.com/download/dcs.asp (get the sysclean package)
http://www.trendmicro.com/download/pattern.asp (get LPTxxx.zip)

Save and unpack them to the same directory on your hard drive, and run it
from there.

Given the age of this trojan (June 2004) I would hazard a guess that your
system needs securing a whole lot better than you currently do !

I`ve got some newbie level hints and tips on free utils to help you do
that online here:

http://www.coreutilities.co.uk

In general, the first 5 will sort most problems, but some are a little
more smart and need an alternative method to prevent them running...

1) A firewall (see the "Other spyware utilities / info" page)
2) A virus checker
3) Spybot Search & Destroy
4) SpywareBlaster
5) CWShredder

If this doesn't resolve any existing problems...

HijackThis!

(be wary about using HijackThis! as it can prevent your system from
booting properly if you delete the wrong thing)

You can delet the file but not the windows directory. That is the
system file, you might as well format if you are gonna delete that.

Try the MS Anti spyware software...
Spybot S&D

thanks, I had Spybot but my machine doesn't like it; I'm using AVG,
Spydoctor, and yesterday I bought NoAdware. Can I delete the Windows
subdirectory, obviously not the Windows directory?

Do you know what this Trojan is, where I am picking it up and what it
does, etc?

Thanks

Shit - certain products are recommended for a reason, and very few anti-
spyware apps are truly legitimate.

Do a text search on this page to see how many times SpyDoctor gets a
mention... many "anti-spyware" apps are all the same utility, and you
just bought a rogue (unless you got the name wrong) - if you have a
credit card i`d contact them and ask them to sort out a refund /
chargeback.

SpyDoctor (healthycomputerclub.com / nospyware.info)

false positives work as goad to purchase (1); poor scan reporting (1);
same app as #1 Spyware Killer, Spyinator, SpyKiller 2004, SpyLax,
SpySpotter, SpywareThis, & Spyware Protection Pro; Ad-aware knockoff; no
longer available (succeeded by SpyLax) - Note: not to be confused w/
Spyware Doctor, a completely different app by another company [A: 6-29-04
/ U: 10-25-04]
---
SpySpotter (spyspotter.com)

false positives work as goad to purchase; installed via adware drive-by-
downloads (1); same app as #1 Spyware Killer, SpyDoctor, SpyFirewall,
Spyinator, SpyKiller 2005, SpyLax, SpywareThis, & Spyware Protection
Pro; Ad-aware knockoff [A: 8-9-04 / U: 8-9-04]

Spywaredoctor is what I have; just bought Spysweeper too.

Fair enough - you can see how easily these scammers make money though :-}

Actually...while looking for info on this, I came accross a remover
program offered by Grisoft.
