hello - yesturday I downloaded your help/support updates
for xp home ed. - there were 2 - I know one was
critical. Then I restarted the comp. and I was prompted
to scandisk and then when it started up I lost half my
desktop icons, myscreen saver, my email - microsoft
express and it will not let me switch to the classic view
in the control panel. I tried to system restore like in
the past it has worked the dream but in this case it had
nothing to go to an earlier time. otherwise I have half
my icons, I can get online and browse like I am writting
you. not sure what happened except I keep up with your
xp updates regularly and virus software updates - I
believe in keeping up with fresh software updates. I
have no email to check - can you call me at 828-264-9575.

Thank you,

Luke

Windows XP has an annoying feature that prompts you about cleaning up your
desktop icons. Could you have inadvertently said yes to the desktop cleanup
and not realize it?

from Boone, NC (I hope that's not really your telephone number you just
posted to the masses?)

It looks as if your patch updates may have coincided with a newly used part
of your disk that encountered some corrupt sectors - all sorts of wierd
things can happen at this point. What did your scandisk log say? Is your
disk FAT32 or NTFS? Right click on C: drive and go to the tools tab and
"error check" the disk. Turn autofix and checking on and hope it can fix it
up somewhat. But it appears you may already have parts of the OS corrupted.

If you need your personal data then back it up to a second HDD or multiple
CD-RWs, try to recover using the XP disk, if all else fails then reinstall
and choose any options to error check the disk before installing.

PK
