I downloaded SP3 from the MS website after the SystemRestore and it said it
installed, then when I clicked finish a CMD window came up and the words
"Access Denied" rolled down the window about 7 to 10 times. What does that
mean and how can I tell if SP3 installed or not?

Start -> run -> winver
Should tell you what you have running.
If SP3 was installed you'd also have an Uninstall in control panel ->
add/remove programs.

If you are talking about the automatic download of SP3, and you really
did not get it working as stated above, then don't do it via windows
update. Download it yourself and run it yourself.

That's exactly what I did after the System Recovery, not a System Restore.
We couldn't do anything to change the user/Admin because of a DLL failure.
The System Recovery fixed that and some other problems this PC was having.
And SP3 did install. I looked here as you suggested "Start -> run ->
winver," and it did download OK and install. :-)

We got it installed Peter, thank you. I've kept the above pages for future
use. After the System Recovery there were no more problems with corrupt
files, missing jit enables and failed initializations. :-)
