Is there a way to get internet explorer to prompt before addiing anything
into this directory? Some advertisement websites like to download DLL files
directly onto your HDD (currently no prompt) which then continue to run,
adding themselves into the registry so that it will also load on system
startup.

My firewall picked up some unusual activity from some (non-internet related)
programs attempting to change my browser settings. Presumably it was a hijack
attempt, but after averting the danger by denying access I noticed some DLL
files had installed themselves without notice. They were signed using the
same signature as many other more respectable software companies.

Is this a sign that signatures cannot be trusted anymore? Either way a
resolution would be gratefully appreciated. Preferably one which doesn't
throw a pop up dialog box at me every 5 seconds asking about every single
line in a javascript.

Thank you in advance.

Go to internet options>security>custom level and change your settings to
these.

To help stop unauthorized downloads via your activex controls change your
default settings.
These settings are good for XP. The wording should be close for other
systems
as well.
Go to control panel and open "internet options.
Click on the security tab then custom level.
make sure these settings are as follows.

Download signed active x controls>set to prompt
Download unsigned active x controls>set to disable
Initialize and script active x controls not marked as safe>set to disable
Run active x controls and pluggins>set to enable
Script active x controls marked safe for scripting>set to enable
Java permissions>set to high
