Hi, When I download a file anywhere...it says its going. But when it is done
there is nothing. Also when I open a zip file I can't extract. It goes
through the motions but it too is nonexistent at the end.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I did this and it worked for me

I had same trouble went to Tools Internet Options Advanced and click on
restore internet explorer settings IE to it's install state then it started
to save files again
one thing I do not like about IE7 is it does not remember the folder where
you last saved files to so you have to keep redoing it the folder

Hi
I had double posts ...the site said error so I posted again and now there
are doubles.
I tried that but no luck. Still won't work.

Let me guess, you are using a web-based reader that you got into by clicking
on a newsgroup link in Vista Help and Support? If so, it is prettly clear
that this is a bug that is causing false negative reports. Report the bug
and then try the Vista Mail newsreader. All of the Vista newsgroups are
listed there and all you have to do is subscribe.

Question for you. Are you using a user account or the original account that
you created when you installed Vista? I also ran into a simular situation
where I created a normal account and downloaded something but it didn't
appear in my download folder where I directed it to even after entering my
admin password to allow that file to download. I tried logging onto the
account that I used when I installed Vista and redownloaded the file and it
was there.

I'm building a new system too

Vista 32bit Business
UAC ON
Avast AV,
OnLine Armor firewall (all shields enabled)
Ad-Aware 2008 Plus - Adwatch
SpyBot Teatimer
Firefox 3.0.1
FlashGot
Free Download Manager
AnVir System manager

I've been downloading stuff all day, including all if the above.

Try looking at Fx Options->General->Downloads ->Save Files To, makes sure
its selected and a "real" dierectory nominated i.e. not one that's in the
TEMP path

Again, I have NO other download software. I see the first dialog asking
to "Run Save Cancel". the second dialog appears for a milisecond and
then closes. No matter if I retry the same download by selecting "Run"
or "Save", the result is nothing runs and or nothing saves. I'm an
advanced Vista user and am not making some sort of newbie error.

This is just a WAG, so don't trash me if it's way off base <g>: have you
tried running the System File Checker?

TUT, Thanks for your idea but it doens't work. I've tried specifying a
specific download folder but no matter where I choose, the file doesn't
exist. Also, If I choose to RUN the program that I'm downloading (from
the begining, not after it downloads), the program never runs. The only
thing that happens is the progress bar reaches 100% and then all the
windows close. Situation is repeatable- Happens every time.

Have tried going to Internet Options and restoring all security, etc,
settings to default?

You don't have to - like most BB's vistax4 allows guests - I'd rather go
there that some file download site

have you reinstalled, if so could you let us know what happened

reading through your posts it seems to be a file system issue rather than an
'net issue, the files do download but they disappear as soon as they've
finished, yet you can copy files - that's how you got Firefox onto the
system.

Have you looked through the processes & services that are running on your
system, and are they all kosher

I would not be hard to write something that monitored downloads and deleted
files as soon as they've finished, even I could do that. The fact the
problems persists under Safe mode makes me feel this is a malware problem,
packaged as a driver (not sure I could do that)

BTW what did you use to scribble on those images at vistax64 - I use .Bug
Shooting which allows me to type stuff and draw shapes, but hand written has
a lot more impact.

It doesn't allow guests, you idiot! Look at how MANY of those "guests"
there are!! Did you see an opportunity to be a "guest" when you signed up?

All those GUESTS' posts that have been scrunged from Microsoft servers.
That wretched forum then mingles those posts in with posts like yours -
making the place look 1000 times busier than it is.

I'm showing as "guest" and I'm posting to the Microsoft servers using Forte
Agent, a news reader.

WHUPS... replied to you as if you were posting from Vista Forums.

Sorry.

What I said still stands. And yes, to view that image one needs to NOT be
a guest.

The problem is AVG.
Note that AVG is NOT compatible with VISTA.
AVG is programmed for WINDOWS XP.

It wasn't the problem here, whizkid: I didn't have AVG installed. It
happened with NO A/V software installed and NO malware software
installed/running.

Sorry, but that is simply an incorrect statement on many levels. AVG is
Vista compatible and has been since the Vista beta program. There are no
"scripts" in AVG. And it's my personal experience with AVG on my desktop,
my laptop, and my wife's laptop (all running Vista) that it is one of the
better antivirus solutions for Vista, certainly far better than
Norton/Symantec.

However, when trying to figure out why my system suddenly ate
everything I downloaded using IE (just a few days ago), I went and
Googled the problem until my fingertips nearly bled from typing.

MANY of the hits I followed showed that people had fixed it by
uninstalling AVG. A TON of fixes credited that uninstallation. It's
the only consistent thread I found.

It wasn't my problem - never did figure it out because I tired of
trying and merely performed a system restore. But I really would have
liked to have figured out what happened.

Having no antivirus is better than having Norton/Symantec.

As to AVG, which is also my personal preference, the issues I've seen mostly
stem from systems that were upgraded from XP with AVG already in place, not
those cleanly installed with Vista and AVG added after the fact.

AVG is programmed for WINDOWS XP.

Meaning, some scripts in AVG may interrupt VISTA making downloads
unable to work smoothly.

I'd advise you to go with another ANTIVIRUS program, such as Norton
which is compatible with VISTA, but it DOES cost money.

Hi. I am having the exact same problem that Lefmb was having. I have had
Vista for over a year know and have been downloading with no problem. About
2 months ago I started to have this problem with IE and switched to Firefox,
which continued to work just fine. The other day I upgraded to the new
Firefox version and it started happening in Firefox. Tried Safari, same
problem. Just like Leifmb, the files all dowload correctly, just disappear
from designated download folder. I checked the permissions as you suggest in
the security tab of the download folder, but I already had full control of
everything. I did notice a couple of things.

There are 3 user names I am allowed to select in the Folder properties tabl
1 System
2 Joh (JohnDoe/Joh
3 Administrators (JohDoe/Administrators)

Am I setup wrong from the get go

Antoher thing:

When I iniitally choose my download I am given the option of running the
file instead of saving it. If I choose run, I get an error message that says
"can't access c/users/john/AppData/Local/Temp"

Thanks in advance for any advice

I can confirm that this worked for me, cheers man.

"NOT compatible with Vista." where did you get that impression? Actually it
was one of the first that was compatible...
AVG 8.0 Free worked like a charm on my Windows Vista Ultimate 23-bit, and is
8.0 now doing an excellent job on Windows Vista Home Premium 64-bit.
