downloaded applications won't open

I keep getting messages saying things like this " name of application.exe has encountered a problem and needs to close" This happens on most downloads I try to install/or/open. Also many times I get Microsoft has encountered a problem and needs to cose

On winzip downloads this doesn't occur.
