I'm looking for something like Schlesinger's "Almanac of American History",
a detailed, chronological listing of major events for the 20th century,
etc., but a freely downloadable resource.

Anybody seen anything like that? I've been Googling, but haven't found
anything really good yet.

Sorry if this is OT, as it isn't strictly speaking "software" I'm looking
for - more like an e-book.

My idea is to use the timeline to help stimulate my elderly Mother's
memories, and to help us integrate family history with national/world
events.

You can get "Almanac of American History" through Amazon for a few
dollars.

I've not heard of that book, so I can't say what would it would compare
to on the web.

You're a goofball. Go buy the book.

I'd like to know about freeware like this, too. Or even a free e-book.
Provided it's done in a scholarly manor. ;)

What about this:

The e-book, I'm not aware of, but a timeline generator, I can offer:

Name: Timeline Maker
Vers: 1.0
Auth: ProgenySoftware
Site: tp://www.timelinemaker.com/
Down: http://www.timelinemaker.com/history_details.html
PLic: Register & Feedback ware <-- atleast it does not cost any money, only
soem time
BLic: Shareware
Note: link to a website that already created some timelines
http://soshg.free.fr/timeline/timeline.htm
Info:
TimeLine Maker 1.0 is a handy utility that lets you record and chart
timelines for a wide variety of chronological data, including genealogies,
world events, health records. Using TimeLine Maker you can print color
charts, publish as HTML documents or save images (i.e. BMP and JPEG) for
insertion into documents. Create your own timelines as simply as entering
data and selecting a display format

You might find something useful here in the history section:

E-books downloadable in many formats, including PDF.

Thanks; I downloaded the whole thing last night, using HTTrack. Over 10MB!
It might even be too much detail, but I'll see.

I'd be interested in your HTTrack settings because I can't get over
2MB to download.

You might want to check the "Site Size Limit" on the Limits tab:

From the help file:

a.. Site size limit
This option limits the total amount of bytes that can be downloaded in the
current mirror

You may have the limit set to 2MB. Or you may have some other limit in
effect.
