$$ There is no BLAST of a sponsor screen on mine. ...
$$ Mine is for personal use and there are no ads. ...
$$ I disagree since I don't get a BANNER ad with it ...
Since I've never downloaded and tested the program (no point polluting my
disk and registry with entries that remain after an uninstall of an unknown
product that may get uninstalled), I have to go by what the manufacturer
describes for their product. Maybe you don't get the sponsor blasts but
that's not what UltimateZip says. Could be they removed the ads but didn't
update their web site. Could be they added the ads after you did your
dowload of the product. I did see a comment, "There's also the freeware
UltimateZip which is a WinZip-clone. And supports everything WinZip does,
but without any nags after the 30-day trial period",
(
http://www.ciol.com/content/opinion/freeloader/102090901.asp). So maybe it
nags at first, shuts up after a month, and you forgot about the nags because
they don't occur anymore.
The article also mentions, "Development of this utility seems to have
stopped in March 2002", so I have to wonder if I want to bother with an old
and stagnant product. If you look at the creator's own download web site
(
http://www.ultimatezip.com/download.htm), the latest version available
(2.7.1) is dated way back on 9/27/2002. I also used to have WinZip but it's
been at version 8 for so long (and version 9 has been in beta all the time)
that I figure it's a dead end product, too.
$$ It was just a suggestion! I'm not holding a gun to your head.
Nor can you cover my mouth with a virtual gag to prevent me from expressing
my opinion, as I cannot prevent you from expressing yours. That's freedom.
I realize it was a suggestion. You can't force anyone to do anything just
by writing words in an electronic medium. That's self-evident.
A few days ago I just read a review that compared WinZip, UltimateZip, and
several other file compression archive utilities (but peculiarly left out
PKZip). Damn, but I can't remember where I read it. It wasn't some biased
user review usually based on their limited experience on one or two products
but instead delved into their performance on various file sizes and
filetypes, speed and compression ratios, features, and other detailed
analysis. My recollection was that UltimateZip did okay. However, the
creator's description on their web site of the sponsor ads repelled me.
Seeing that it has stagnated doesn't prod me to use it, either.
