Well, I suppose it could be considered free if you don't mind getting
blasted by the sponsor screen. According to their own FAQ at
http://www.ultimatezip.com/faq.htm:

a.. Q: I dont like the sponsor screen, how can i remove it?
A: If you dont like the sponsor screen, you can donate a minimum amount of
10$ or 10 Euro, if need UltimateZip for privat use. If your company needs a
site license please contact us and ask for prices. Then you get a sponsor
message free version of UltimateZip. All our donators will get lifetime
sponsor message free updates and a support address for e-mail support.

Good freeware is nice but bannerware sucks. As such, UltimateZip is *NOT*
freeware. It is BANNERWARE!

Also, I see no integration (plug-in) for Outlook. They list a "Zip and
Mail" feature but all that is is the product zipping up the selecting
file(s) and then calling MAPI to send the file as an attachment. That's
like "File -> Send -> Page by e-mail" in IE; i.e., there is no integration.
I know PKZip does that (but they also have a plug-in) and WinZip probably
has that, too. I realize that a plug-in for Outlook makes a limited
audience for such a component, but then I don't see them offering a proxy
through which you can send your outbound e-mails to then zip up the
attachments, either, and which would then support any e-mail client using
SMTP.

Since there is almost nothing to their FAQ page, it sure would be nice if
they offered a separate download of the help or documentation rather than
make you install the product to find out what it can and cannot do.

$$ Mine is for personal use and there are no ads. Only the very brief
screen that opens when the program does. I don't find that a problem.

$$ I disagree since I don't get a BANNER ad with it - just a brief flash
of the sponsor screen, just like when ZoneAlarm loads. Many free programs
have that.

Since I've never downloaded and tested the program (no point polluting my
disk and registry with entries that remain after an uninstall of an unknown
product that may get uninstalled), I have to go by what the manufacturer
describes for their product. Maybe you don't get the sponsor blasts but
that's not what UltimateZip says. Could be they removed the ads but didn't
update their web site. Could be they added the ads after you did your
dowload of the product. I did see a comment, "There's also the freeware
UltimateZip which is a WinZip-clone. And supports everything WinZip does,
but without any nags after the 30-day trial period",
(http://www.ciol.com/content/opinion/freeloader/102090901.asp). So maybe it
nags at first, shuts up after a month, and you forgot about the nags because
they don't occur anymore.

The article also mentions, "Development of this utility seems to have
stopped in March 2002", so I have to wonder if I want to bother with an old
and stagnant product. If you look at the creator's own download web site
(http://www.ultimatezip.com/download.htm), the latest version available
(2.7.1) is dated way back on 9/27/2002. I also used to have WinZip but it's
been at version 8 for so long (and version 9 has been in beta all the time)
that I figure it's a dead end product, too.

Nor can you cover my mouth with a virtual gag to prevent me from expressing
my opinion, as I cannot prevent you from expressing yours. That's freedom.
I realize it was a suggestion. You can't force anyone to do anything just
by writing words in an electronic medium. That's self-evident.

A few days ago I just read a review that compared WinZip, UltimateZip, and
several other file compression archive utilities (but peculiarly left out
PKZip). Damn, but I can't remember where I read it. It wasn't some biased
user review usually based on their limited experience on one or two products
but instead delved into their performance on various file sizes and
filetypes, speed and compression ratios, features, and other detailed
analysis. My recollection was that UltimateZip did okay. However, the
creator's description on their web site of the sponsor ads repelled me.
Seeing that it has stagnated doesn't prod me to use it, either.

## This can be said of ANY product, any at all - free or paid for.

## When I find a program has annoying ads I get rid of it or if I really
like the software, put up with it.
The article also mentions, "Development of this utility seems to have
stopped in March 2002", so I have to wonder if I want to bother with an old
and stagnant product.

## If it's FREE and works great - why not? Keeping up with the Jones?

If you look at the creator's own download web site
(http://www.ultimatezip.com/download.htm), the latest version available
(2.7.1) is dated way back on 9/27/2002. I also used to have WinZip but it's

that I figure it's a dead end product, too.

## Then you'll just have to search around for fresh new products that may
be no better than the older ones. Whatever floats your boat. To me it's
more important that the product work, and work well, than when it was
developed.
Nor can you cover my mouth with a virtual gag to prevent me from expressing
my opinion, as I cannot prevent you from expressing yours. That's freedom.
I realize it was a suggestion. You can't force anyone to do anything just

## I didn't try and stop you from expressing your opinion. Don't get
your jockeys (or panties) in a wad. I don't write or sell software so
couldn't care less what you buy or try.

I've used WinZip for a couple years. Then I went to PKZip because it was
faster (and WinZip does have problems with CRC values on some really big
files). I saw the screens for UltimateZip. I've seen others, too. So far,
nothing really integrates tightly into Windows. The tightest integration
was ZipMagic which actually installed another installable file system (just
like CDFS gets installed to support CDs). It's probably been 3 years or
more since I used ZipMagic so I don't recall why I quit using it. Could be
it was interferring too much when I was doing Java programming which has
..zip files (which are not really the exact same). Could be it didn't
compress as well as PKZip. Don't remember if it let me create
self-extracting .exe archive files.

Since Aladdin snatched up ZipMagic, they don't provide much info on the
product anymore nor is a demo available. Alas, I can't trial it to see if
I'd use it again. Guess they really want you to use their StuffIt program
instead.
