I have Office 97 on the computer at work. We have a database that was built
in a newer version of access. I need to get into this database but i can't
seem to open it with the 97 version. Is there an upgrade that i may download
that will enable me to open and view the information on the database?

You can *purchase* - but not download - Access 2003 (or on the
secondary market, Access 2000, or 2002 aka AccessXP).

If you can find someone with a more current version of the program,
there is a feature (Tools... Convert) to convert an Access200x
database to an A97 database format. Any new features which did not
exist in 97 will be lost, of course.

Hi Katie,

There's no free update that lets Access 97 open databases in the file
formats used by later versions. To use the database you'd need to
install a later version of Access.

If your Windows installation has been kept up to date, however, it
probably already includes a recent version of the Jet database engine
that can read MDB files in recent formats. So in principle it's possible
to write code in VBScript or even VBA that can access the data (but not
the user interface).

I should have added:

The alternative of course is to use a computer with a more recent
version of Office to save the database in Access 97 format.
