Defender;the download hangs at 89%. This is on a brand new XP PRO SP2 with
all available updates(as of 5/18). Multiple refresh;reboots;still same
problem. No past verions on pc. Any help?

Select the slim.
Note, uncheck Yahoos toolbar during install.

Open Ccleaner and press "Windows" "Aplications" and "Run Cleaner" from the
menu choose 'Issues' and then press scan for issues, Repair any fºund.

Look for the broom Clean up, also Tune Up..

I'd recommend re-downloading, and saving to a known location--like the
desktop.
After the download is complete, disable real-time protection by your
antivirus for long enough to do the installation. please disable or turn off
as much other software that always runs as you can--real time antivirus
scanning, any other antispyware software, etc.
I hope this post is helpful, let us know how it works ºut.

Another user encountered almost the same problem downloading, but I can't
remember (I'm still not fully awake) which thread. The user had a laptop and
was connected through his home pc. Bottom line - the user connected directly
to his modem and was able to download successfully. I don't believe the
download problem is caused by WD. In the other case, it was probably a
wireless to wired connectivity issue going through a Linksys router. There
was never any resolution on the connectivity issue. I personally encountered
a similar download problem after I changed Max TCP Receive Buffer size in the
registry and it was in conflict with the buffer size set by my network
adapter.

Well,
Tryed everything-no firewal,virus scan;cleaned out temp
files;reformatted(brand new laptop-nothing i needed to save), and still
hangs at 89%-Looked at network in task manager-great network utilization
till I hit 89%-then BANG 0%- like it's throttled or the file is corrupted.
My cable went out b4 all this-they can't come out till Saturday; and now
I'm running wireless to a Linksys router at my neighbors next door. (asked
him first) he said ok;gave me his WPA key and have downloaded WMP11-no
problems;IE7 Beta 2 no problems;everywhere I go to download-no problems-
EXCEPT for the Defender download!!! HELP!!!

Jeff
Hi Jeff,

put of your firewall.

If you haven't already tried disabling real-time protection on your
antivirus, try that. Mr Cat has the right memory of what someone else
found--but it probably won't help you, unless you can run a wire to the next
door router, rather than running wirelessly. (in the earlier thread, the
user had been running wirelessly via a router to a cable modem. They
attached the cable modem directly to their machine, and the download
completed. I don't have a good explanation for why that might be.)

Bill,
I'm stumped on this one. Never has happened b4 and its only that
specific download. got this XP PRO straight outta the box from Dell;and the
first thing I did was to install ALL XP updates;ran great. Then ran WMP11-big
download;ripped through it. Then IE7 Beta 2-no problems; all 3rd party
downloads A. O.K. too!! Very weird-like the image is corrupted somehow!! I
mean ; everyway i've tried-dead stop;right at 89%. Goes from 25% network
utilization to Zero. It'll try to connect cuz it'll go from 0 to .02% back
and forth-constantly. for eternity-if I'de let it-lol. All I can figure is
that either the image from the Defender download site has got a bad
packet-or byte or some unstabilty,at that exact point;or the pathway-which
is different than I usually use; is somehow causing it to degrade at that
specific point in the download. I might go grab a protocol analyzer-like
Ethereal-and take a look at the traffic on the "wire". But it may be some
weird deal from the neighbors router causing it. If it works when my cable
modem comes back on line on saturday;then it's definitely the pathway
causing it. I'll be good till then-(went to a technet event tuesday;and
Steve Dodsen might be upset;but on the cd they gave out was;Guess?? MSAS
Giant!!! LOL-still nicer, and still supported-SSSHHH-lol) If you run across
any more ifo;post bck pls.

Bill,
For some weird reason;that was it. Went to college;hooked into
their network; Bingo!! Defendef downloaded no problem!!

I don't know what causes this--it's been posted often enough, with a very
similar description, to make me wonder whether there's a bad image on a
server somewhere, or in a cache--and all the stuff people do to get around
it is just luck--eventually, you try via different route, etc, and it
goes.....
