I'm having a difficult time trying to download off the Internet right now. I
can't download anything, nor can I download attachments off my email. It
tells me that "Internet Explorer was not able to open this Internet site.
The requested site is either unavailable or cannot be found. Please try
again later." At the same time, I cannot get any streaming video or audio.
I do not have any type of spyware or antivirus software that is causing this
type of security.

Hi dorlsae :-)

You don't mention the version of Windows you are using, which really is a
must when asking for help in the newsgroups, but, try the following and see
if it helps:

Open Internet Explorer. On the Tools menu, click Internet Options.
2. On the General tab, under Temporary Internet Files click Delete Files.
3. In the Delete Files dialog box that appears, click OK.
4. Under History, click Clear History.
5. In the dialog box that appears, click OK.
6. Quit Internet Explorer.
7. Log on to the computer by using the account of a user who does not
experience the problem, and then open a command prompt.
8. Change the directory to the following path:
drive:\Documents and Settings\username\Local Settings\Temporary Internet
Files\Content.IE5
where username is the name of the user account that has the problem.
9. Type del index.dat, and then press ENTER.
10. Close the command prompt, and then restart the computer.
The Index.dat file is recreated the next time that you log on to the
computer

also..

Check for a hosts file (just "hosts" not hosts.sam or lmhosts) in these
locations:
Windows XP. C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\DRIVERS\ETC
Windows 2K. C:\WINNT\SYSTEM32\DRIVERS\ETC
Win 98\ME. C:\WINDOWS
You may have to enable the viewing of hidden files.

Rename your HOSTS file to OLDHOSTS and see if the problem persists.

Hope this helps.

Jan, if you don't mind my saying so, it's also beneficial to other
readers to be able to see the original question instead of it being
deleted or hidden by the respondent. This seems to occur a lot more
frequently nowadays, and I'm not sure why. If there's a reason, I'd be
very interested in knowing it. Thanks.

Hi :-)

I never personally never delete the original OP's question, however, I can't
speak for other responders, but, my replies are primarily for the benefit of
the OP, as they already know what they posted in their original message. The
OP's original question and all subsequent replies and responses are left in
tact below my answers for the benefit of other readers, who, if they wish,
can either read the thread from the start, or go to the last post and read
through all the lines of the thread as they wish. I. nor the OP, need to
wade through all the many lines of each message to get a to the crux of the
reply. In the MS newsgroups, top or bottom posting is acceptable.

Hope this helps.

Thanks for your reply, and I understand your point. I had started from
the assumption that discussions in a searchable public forum like this
are viewed by many people who never post, but simply look for
suggestions they can use to answer their own similar questions. (Not
nearly enough, though -- the number of redundant questions posted is
amazing.) Quite often a response by itself is unintelligible, or omits
a key search term from the OP. But a lot of people do agree with you,
and it seems hiding the OP is becoming a lot more common.

Hi :-)

I can't speak for others who top post as well, but, I don't try to hide any
part of the thread, I always leave all parts of the message in my replies.
If parts get deleted, it is usually not done by me, and I myself, like many
other responders, prefer that all the parts of the previous messages are
kept in the OP's and other replies as well, as I, like many other
responders, don't always have time to go back through all the layers of the
thread to see what got left out where. But, I can't control that part, or
others who may also pop in to help out who may snip to suit their own
preferences. I don't understand your reference to 'hiding the OP', as no one
tries to hide the OP, all the information is usually there if someone wants
to look for it. Most readers who are really interested in finding a
solution to their problem don't mind reading through the thread to find out
which solutions resolved the problems for the OP. You'll find most other
boards are not much different. If the solution to the subject problem does
not pop right out at you when you click on a reply, then you will likely
need to research the thread to find out.

Jan, I sincerely apologize both for shamelessly hijacking this thread
and for seeming to be argumentative. Reading through your response I
am thoroughly confused, and now I wonder if my problem is some setting
on my own computer. What I see here is the Topic "Download problems",
with (prior to this present post) 6 messages in topic. These 6 are
from you, me, you, me, you, and you.

That is, the very first topmost post visible to me is *not* the OP, but
your response to it. At the end of your initial post is the "Show
quoted text" where your quoted portion of the OP may be read, but I'm
under the perhaps mistaken impression that its being hidden makes the
OP invisible to Google Groups search. Also, infrequently but very
occasionally it can be helpful to be able to "view profile" for a
poster, to look for related issues, but in this thread there is no
original poster or profile left available. In any case, I need to come
down to the bottom of your response to find the original question, or
the remaining portions that were quoted.

I don't mind reading through an entire thread, and I always at least
skim through all posts when the question is of interest. I readily
admit to not understanding Google's Reply format -- occasionally the
Reply box automatically puts in text being replied to with the > symbol
for me, but usually not. It isn't doing so here now; if it's following
a rule, I don't know what the rule is. But I understand you to be
saying that what you're seeing in this thread is different from what I
can see -- is that correct?

Re Google Groups Search function: the search term "hijacking" does
return this topic, sorting by date, while a search for "streaming
video" (a distinctive term occurring only inside the hidden OP) does
not. Thus if I had been searching for new info or comments on download
problems with streaming video, this thread would be invisible to me.

Well, just to prove me wrong, in a re-search of the term "streaming
video", presumably to pick up my use of it, Google *did* pick up the
hidden text -- but not mine(!)

Okay, I definitely don't understand Google Groups Search, either. I
had put up another post, now deleted, saying that Search returned this
thread on a search term "hijacking", but not on the term "stream*ng
v*deo" (but spelled out correctly) which had appeared only in the
hidden text of the OP. But then a re-search did find this thread, not
for my post, but for the hidden text in the OP. Now after deleting my
own use of the search term, Google again doesn't find this thread at
all. Makes no sense. But assuming this is Google's standard search
procedure, if I had been looking for new comments concerning download
problems with stream*ng v*deo, I would never have found this thread. I
know it seems not to happen frequently, but I think people with
questions are supposed to search for existing discussions instead of
always posting de novo redundantly.

Hi :-)

I would imaging that you and I are seeing different variations of this
thread if you are using Google as your search engine. What you are
experiencing is one of the primary reasons why I so dislike using Google and
rarely ever do. For some, Google may be their friend, but, it is not that
user friendly for me. :-)

Additionally, I totally dislike the way it works as a newsreader, and it is
confusing unless you click the Show all on the response list to show all of
the thread and related responses, for the very reasons you state here. Some
swear by it, I swear at it. ;o)

I personally use Copernic Agent. It spans the Internet more or less
incorporating Google, MSN and all other search software, and it's free:
http://www.copernic.com/
While some say it is not good software, I have used it exclusively for my
researching for several years now without any problems, and I do a *lot* of
searching. You can set how you want to search, how you want the results
displayed, and many other settings to personalize it to the way you want to
search and review the results.

I also use Outlook Express as my newsreader, as it is much easier to view
and follow the various threads, and I use it for my emails as well. If you
would like to try for reading your newsgroups as opposed to using the Google
groups interface, here is how to set it up. It is part of Windows as well,
so you should have it if you have IE6.

How to Configure Outlook Express for Internet News
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?kbid=171164&product=oex
How do I make OE my default mail client
http://www.oehelp.com/oedef.aspx

I may seem to be giving a lot of personal preferences here, but, I have been
working the newsgroups for some time, both as an OP and responder, and do a
great deal of researching in my own occupation, and I have tried many of the
various ways of searching the Internet and viewing the newsgroups, and I
have found what I use now is the easiest, fastest and works best for me and
many others as well. I can find the same information with Copernic as I do
with Google or any of the other search engines, but, without all the
confusion.

Hope this helps.

Have you tried doing a System Restore to a date prior to when the problem
began? Did you install any updates or 3rd party toolbars, ad or popup
blockers, or other programs such as Zone alarm, etc. at the time the problem
began? What type of files are you trying to download? .exe, images, PDF's,
etc. Are you getting any error messages, if so, what is the exact wording?

Hope this helps.

Try the following:

Internet Explorer Cannot Download Office Documents from an IIS Server When
Content Expiration Is Set to Expire Immediately
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=317208

Make sure that IE is configured to use the SSL 2.0 and SSL 3.0:
Got to Tools>Internet Options>Advanced tab
Scroll down to the Security section scroll down and check the box next to
Use SSL 2.0 and Use SSL 3.0 if not already checked
Click OK

Then verify the Date/Time setting on your machine is correct, as SSL
certificates have an expiry date, and if the date on your computer isn't
correct it may prevent you from connecting to secure sites.
Go to Start >Control Panel>click Date/Time
On the date tab check to make sure that the date and time settings are set

Hi Dorlsae :-)

It may be more than just an IE related problem that you are not able to
download. Try this:
Tools > Internet Options > Advanced > Browsing
Uncheck the Enable 3rd party browser extensions
If this allows you to access the Internet, then you can be sure you machine
is infected. However, that fact that it does not, does not mean that you
system is not indeed infected. Follow the steps here to fully clean your
system of any hidden scumware:

Dealing with Unwanted Spyware and Parasites:
http://mvps.org/winhelp2002/unwanted.htm
Be aware, your Anti-Virus won't detect all types of warez, Trojans, malware,
worms, etc., and neither can other adware or spyware related programs such
as AdAware and SpyBot. They don't have the proper definitions. They must
also be run in Safe Mode with Hidden Files enabled in order to fully scan
all files. Even if you have run such programs and nothing shows up, it does
not mean your system is clean. It takes a series of programs to fully clean
your machine. Some very aggressive and damaging variants of malware can
replicate themselves repeatedly, or mutate, if not removed properly.

I am also cross-posting this to the Windows ME newsgroup so that perhaps
some of the guru's there can assist with finding a solution for your
problem.

Hope this helps.
