If I load what I think is a new update, for example, for
internet security, but that update is already on my
computer, will I get a message stating that the update is
already there and ask to overwrite or cancel, or will it
automatically add this second "copy" to my hard drive
without notification, and take up space without my being
aware of it? Thanks.

If you are using http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com/ (That, the Microsoft
Catalog and the Automatic updates are the ONLY trustworthy update sources
for Windows XP) to get your updates, it shouldn't happen that you get the
same update again.

Plus, if you do get it and install it again, it's the same thing - it takles
up the same space.

If you are referring to Windows Update, fear not. Windows Update checks your
computer to see what has already been installed, and only offers you what
you don't already have.

Not true. I've downloaded and installed updates, checked back for new ones
and was told that the very ones I'd previously installed were still needed.
The only recourse was to download again. Check here,
http://www3.telus.net/dandemar/needagain.htm , should you run into this
issue. Before installing any updates, be sure to disable any anti-virus
software you're running.
