I've just upgraded my internet connection with NTL World to their 600k
service. There's a 1gb limit per day cap on how much you can use their
service. Is there a freeware application that will monitor my internet
usage, counting how many mb i've downloaded so i can make sure i don't go
over the limit?

I can't help you, but 1gb per DAY is an reasonably large amount to get
through in 1 day so unless you're d/l'ing some illegal isos/warez then you
will never go over it.

If using Windows, why not enable the internet connection systray icon,
then just rightclick it from time to time ?

strange answer. i have a 640 dsl, and using it intensively could lead to 6.5
gb per day without downloading anything illegal. havent you downloaded any
big sites ? mvps.org, for instance ? i also had to recover a backup of my
own site from the internet, and now it's > 1.7 gb.

dave, i use dlul utilkit meter free. it eats some resources (2-3%) but is
very handy.
you can have a glimpse at
http://www.snapfiles.com/screenshots/dlulmeter.htm
snapfiles say they havent got it now, and http://www.utilkit.com gives a
403-forbidden.
but searching for "dlul utilkit" gives many links, so you should find it.

anyway, if you're using windows, right clicking the connection icon in the
tray opens a window with dl/ul stats -- totals, not dailies. also, hovering
the mouse over the icon will popup a tooltip. for displaying the icon in
win2k: explorer > control panel > network > rightclick on [yourconnection] >
properties > check the bottom box.

Hi Dave, the cap exists but is believed to be monitored over a month...say
you downloaded 45GB in a month, the consensus is that you'd be warned about
it by NTL as your monthly average is higher than 1GB a day. So...what you
need is a monthly total. AnalogX netstat does just this and will also give
you a total since last reboot, an indication of current 'live' throughput
(upload/download)..plus it looks pretty and sits quietly in the systray;
