Download managers and redirected links

I've tried a couple of (freeware) download managers, but they can only
download files that are behind direct links (example
www.site.org/file.zip).

Is there a download manager that can properly download files that are
behind indirect links?

Web browsers don't seem to have any problems with them so why is it so
hard for the download managers to get the thing right?

Here is an example:

Download.com does not have direct links. When you click the link with IE
or choose Save As... the file starts downloading fine. When using
leecget or some other download manager the result is just a small html,
asp etc file. Why is that and is there as solution?

I have been told that DLExpress works well in this situation. But I have
not tried it yet.
I am currently using Stardownloader and it does not work very well for most
indirect links.
I will be switching to DLExpress and see if it is any better.

I do not know any free download manager that can do this. But you may
try product IDM product from Tonec inc. Unfortunately it is not
freeware, but has 60 days trial period. I also saw a crack for it
somewhere. Download the latest beta version of IDM. It should work
with any browser and handle all downloads. Please note that you need
to restart your browser in order its integration start working.

With some Moz browsers you can set the maximum # of re-directs.
Bear in mind that they refer to it as a "download manager".
Dunno, about that description.

Rant

One thing I don't like about current browsers is that they've
taken away the majority of suffixes for domain name completion.
completing only the .com suffix. Effectively filtering the web.
Forcing, relying on search engines instead of doing DNS searches
for Dns results for the suffixes first. With the addition of new
suffixes, this trend is even more aggregious.

End rant
