I've been using Download Accelerator, but I don't like the banners. I like
Shareaza, but it seems that some sites refuse it. I would like mirror
searching.

Free Download Manager (FDM) offers you a vast variety of options to control
and schedule your downloads. This is the light-weight but powerful download
manager.

FDM can resume your broken download so that you needn't start it from the
beginning after casual interruption.

FDM allows you to limit the downloading speed. There are 3 modes of the
network usage: Light, Medium and Heavy.

Capability to split download into several sections allows you to increase
download speed up to 600%.

FDM can connect to the Internet at a set time, download the files you
want, launch any program, disconnect or shut down your computer when it's
done.

This download manager allows you to specify the settings of network
usage, such as login and password, maximum number of connections, default
group, etc. So you can avoid adjusting these settings every time you need to
create new download from the server.

Also you can download the whole web sites from the remote server. You can
adjust FDM to download files with the extensions you have specified.

I can't comment on my favorite except to say that no Freeware DM is quite as
good. :)

The best free one I have tried yet is Free Download Manager. Catch it from
any major Freeware site or www.freedownloadmanager.org

I started thinking something odd was going on in alt.comp.freeware

I will admit that i use a registered shareware on my main computer.

But I have tried zillions over the years, many of which stopped being
free since... What's left:

Download Express (still free, very simple, i use it on some of my
older computers)

Star Downloaded - old free version still available. My favorite for
ages, might have registered when it went shareware if the price had
been lower.

Fresh Download (never liked it but lots of people do)

wackget (very simple, tiny)

But does it work with FireFox? I could not see any info regarding
browser compatibility on their website.

Doesn't Firefox have its own D/L manager? Doesn't it split the download into
parts just like the others?

hmmm...I don't think it does, it only support pause and
resume. In addition, I *think* if you pause it and exit
Firefox, the resume won't work...

Stardownloader also works with Firefox (and IE) without a problem.
