The shareware license itself is the all-important limitation.
I am really sorry, I probably have an old version.
If it was a good program in its last freeware incarnation, then a
recommendation for that freeware release is most welcome here.

Agree, and unfortunately common, when the developer changes course.
Still, keep in mind that most of us are satisfied to use a particular
version of a program, even when it is not the latest, just so long as
it meets the req that it is freeware.
And of course, that it is good in its own right. On this, btw, the
reports in ACF give testimony that the Net Transport freeware releases
have been well worth giving a run.

I don't think you'd necessarily have to use the past tense. Unless you've
tried another free download manager which you've decided to be better than
the LFW of Net Transport...
