Download Manager for Mozilla Firefox?

Now that I have gone over from MS Internet Explorer to Firefox,
I am missing using "Download Express" to speed up downloads.
Can Download Express be made to work with Firefox, or is
there another multithread download manager that will work with
it?

Maybe you can get a better reply by stating exactly what this "Download
Express" does that the Firefox's built-in download manager does not.

Download Express makes the most of ADSL speeds. It does this by
opening up seven connections with the download web site, all in
parallel. So - in theory, you can get a big download in one seventh of
the time, though in practice it is about a third of the time.

As well as this, if you get a problem halfway through a big download
it can pick up from that point later on.

I downloaded the "Pricelessware" freeware CD - about 525MB - with
this in about 2 hours.

I am sure the other people who tried to use that site appreciated you
hogging all their bandwidth with such a program. Most download
managers, such as GetRight will find mirrors, or only open two
connections. Seven is downright abuse!

could get the ext. called "Launchy" , it will let you use different
downloaders , also you can set many to monitor the clipboard (that
might be the best way) ===

DownloadWith extension integrates with arbitary download accelarators.

You might have to configure it manually in some cases.

[rant]Just today I had some pr_ck come onto my server with Flashget
and open 17 connections. Well, that IP is so banned. If you have
broadband you don't need multiple connections to download and if a
single connection is, say, 30 KB/s it's because the whoever is
managing the server is limiting the bandwith for connections to spread
out available slots so as many people can connect as possible given
the bandwidth available. So, take your single connection, let it
download in the background and download something else if you
want.[/rant]

I didn't realise that download managers were tough on servers. How many
connections is fair? Just two? How many does Firefox open on default?

Firefox manager just opens one by default. However, for broadband, the
important feature is Resume in case you lose your connection so you
don't have to start all over again. Conor is right, two connections is
considered fair. This, however, is not considered fair at all (IP
munged to protect the guilty):

Hogging that many connections is really rude. In fact, I think that
even two connections for the same file is one too many.
As well as this, if you get a problem halfway through a big download

IMNSHO this is the only valid reason for using download managers.
When I had a dialup connection, I used GetRight for all large
downloads. Now, with a cable modem, it usually doesn't seem worth the
trouble. A cd image only takes a couple of hours to download rather
than a couple of days. And if the download site has decent bandwidth,
then adding more connections is not going to reduce the time since
your internet connection is already maxed out.

Not to mention that if the dl site detects it, it will limit the bandwidth
you get
anyhow.
