What does "regsvc.download hp1" mean? (A little box that
occurs now and then when starting XP, often several at a time).

Howdy:
What brand is your computer? An HP machine? or do you have HP hardware? (printer, scanner.....)
Can you describe a little more....on that message box (window) ?
Can only guess....but that may be an automated update-search for HP hardware.

Advice: Check up on all your startup programs and services. Run MSCONFIG to check both categories.

I have also guessed it could have something to do with HP,
however, I do not have any HP devices connected with my
machine /Fujitsu-Siemens). There simply appears a small
"regsvc. box during start up, which disappears after
clicking OK". Not very often, however, maybe only once a
month, or so.

Investigate what programs & services are "activated" at each Windows startup. That's to say, your startup-programs-list.
