Suddenly my machine has decided that when I try to download a video file it
will only give me the 'Save' option.

How can I get the 'Open' option back so I can choose which option to take.

Any idea as to how I lost it in the first place would be welcome!

Thanks,

Noel

You set this for each file type, e.g. for .zip
Windows Explorer-Tools-Folder Options-File Types
Find the .zip association
Edit, (or click Advanced on ME or XP) and check the "Confirm open
after download" box

The path to Folder Options may vary according to your operating
system. It may be:
Windows Explorer-View-Folder Options
Windows Explorer-Tools-Folder Options
Start-Settings-Folder Options
Start-Settings-Control Panel-Folder options.

Thanks for the reply - I am sorry I did not make myself as clear as I should
have.

I did not mean to refer to the 'Confirm open after download'

Normally when I tried to download say a .wmv file the dialogue box opened
and gave me two options - Open and Save. Now I only get Save.

I believe you were clear.
You didn't refer to the 'Confirm open after download'. I did.
Please try my recommended solution.

Alan,
Your "recommended solution" doesn't work for Vista.
In Windows Explorer in Vista, there is no "tools" to open, and in the folder
Options, there is no "file types" tab, and thus no "confirm open after
download" box to check.
I have the same problem with a new Vista Laptop I purchased. It's
frustrating to have to save every pic, movie, etc to my machine before i can
view them. I am aware in the name of security ("alert status red" and all
that) that it is safer to save attachments to my machine first where they can
be scanned first, rather than opening them from source, but... I can trust
pictures, movies that get emailed to me.
My XP desktop allows me to "open" attachments, or view pictures in my emails
in hotmail without "saving" them first, but it seems this doesn't happen in
Vista.
Is there a setting that can be changed to allow the option of "open" in the
download dialogue box?
thanks for any help...

I am tempted to say it also doesn't work in Win 3.1 either, but I
won't.

Sorry, but I don't do Vista.
Please try a Vista newsgroup.
